The Roughback Batfish has a flattened body with rough, spiny plates covering its head and body. The tail fin is pale or whitish with a wide, dark edge that may appear reddish-brown or black. It has a small mouth with reddish to orange lips. The body color varies from olive to brown or reddish shades, often with red blotches and scattered white or black specks. Many individuals have fleshy tabs and thin projections on the back, and the head is slightly raised with a short snout.
This Batfish lives on the bottom in sandy, muddy, or rocky areas. It rests on the seafloor and is sometimes partly covered by sand or mud. It is often hiding or resting during the day and is more active at night.
