Rose Coral appears in two main shapes. One form grows as a small oval mound with a long central groove and several short side grooves, and the lower side often narrows toward a short stalk. The other form grows as a rounded head with twisting ridges and valleys and a flatter underside. Colors range from brown to yellow-brown, gray, or green, and the ridges and valleys often show slightly different shades.
The Rose Coral oval form is usually found on sand, rubble, or among Turtle Grass, and it often rests loosely on the bottom. The rounded form grows firmly attached to hard surfaces together with other stony corals. Young colonies may start as small disks before developing their adult structure.
