This Moray has a stout body with loose, wrinkled skin. Its body is broad banded with wide brown or dark gray bands alternating with pale gray bands. Its head is large and widens behind the short snout, with small eyes positioned near the tip of the snout.
The Broadbanded Moray spends the day hiding in cracks with just its head sticking out. It often opens and closes its mouth to breathe. If threatened, it puffs up the loose skin around its head to look bigger. It usually ignores divers but will slowly move away if they get too close.
