This Goby can appear in various shades of brown or gray with wide, dusky bars across its back. The upper edge of the pectoral fins is slightly ragged, giving it the name Frillfin.

The Frillfin Goby can be found in shallow water between rocky rubble and is often seen in tide pools. There are multiple species of Bathygobius that are similar in appearance, making identification of the exact species difficult.
