The Cave Basslet is salmon-colored to dark red, without strong body stripes. A black band lies near the edge of its tail and may be bordered with white. A black mark appears on its second dorsal fin. Its snout is yellow near the eye, and the outer edges of its second dorsal, anal and tail fins can be white to bright blue.
The Cave Basslet stays hidden in small crevices and holes along coral-covered walls at greater depths. It is cautious but curious.
