The Lantern Bass has a white body with rows of dark blotches. The lower side has a distinct row of rectangular dark or orange blotches. Along its side is a line of yellow spots, and black spots mark the base of its tail. Its coloration may appear more red in deeper waters.

The Lantern Bass is mostly found alone in shallow areas near coral rubble. It stays within a small territory and feeds on small crustaceans and tiny fish. It is both male and female at the same time, with larger individuals often functioning as males that protect a group and father most of the offspring.
