The Mutton Hamlet has a marbled body with a mix of olive to reddish-brown, often with faint bars and a dense covering of orange or red spots. Its fins also display scattered pale spots, which can sometimes appear bluish. The body may also have pale white blotches and small dark dots.

The Mutton Hamlet is mostly seen on the east coast of Bonaire, resting alone in seagrass beds or on rocky slopes covered with algae. It becomes active at dusk and at night, feeding mainly on crustaceans. Its name probably comes from its similarity to both Mutton Snappers and Hamlets, though the exact reason for the name is unclear.
