The Peppermint Basslet has a light reddish-orange body with prominent dark red and yellow-gold horizontal stripes. It has a distinctive dark spot with light blue edges on the rear dorsal and anal fins, and a dark tail that is bordered by a light blue edge.
The Peppermint Basslet is shy and can be seen alone in caves, under ledges and deep crevices on the reef. It feeds on small invertebrates and other tiny creatures like crustaceans. It gets its name from its striking coloration, which resembles the red-and-white striping of a peppermint candy.
