The Rock Hind has a light olive body with numerous dark reddish spots. It can become pale-colored in sandy areas, blending in with its surroundings. A distinct black blotch is located at the base of the tail, and additional dark blotches are visible along its back just below the dorsal fin.
The Rock Hind is very shy and is often found alone, hiding under ledges or in crevices in shallow waters. It is an ambush predator, feeding on small crabs, shrimp, and other invertebrates that pass by its hiding spot. Like many other groupers, it is born female and has the ability to change to male.
