The Tobaccofish has a body with shades of orange to mottled brown, with alternating dark and white blotches along its back. Its underside is sometimes pale, and its tail has dark markings.

The Tobaccofish is found in sandy and rocky areas near coral rubble, often hovering just above the seafloor. It may be seen alone or in loose, small groups and appears cautious. It feeds by hovering low above the sand and preying on small crustaceans.
