The Black Grunt has a silvery-gray body covered in dark lines formed by spots on its scales. Its large eye is sometimes surrounded by a golden tint, and it has a dusky tail. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are mostly dark, sometimes with a slight yellow tint.
This Grunt is shy and can be found over soft sand and mud bottoms in shallow waters. It is active at night or during dawn and dusk, feeding on crustaceans, mollusks, and small invertebrates. During the breeding season, it forms distinct pairs and lays eggs. It is also known to make a grunting sound by grinding its teeth together, a behavior common among many species in the Grunt family.
