The Blackfin Snapper has a scarlet red body with a distinctive black blotch at the base of its pectoral fin. Its dorsal, caudal, and anal fins are bright yellow, and a bronze tint encircles its eye. Juveniles are lighter gray or white and have a distinct yellow patch at the upper base of their tail.
This Snapper is usually found in small groups, inhabiting deeper waters near drop-offs, ledges, and rocky or sandy bottoms. Juveniles are found in much shallower water. It feeds on crustaceans, worms, and other small marine life, with its diet shifting to include more small fish as it grows. Spawning occurs throughout the year, and the eggs and larvae are pelagic, drifting in the ocean currents.
