The Cubera Snapper has a large silver-gray body with occasional faint bars on its back. It has thick lips and no markings around the eye. Its large, canine-like teeth are visible even when its mouth is closed.
This big Snapper can be seen alone on the reef, under ledges, and at wrecks and piers. It is a cautious hunter and uses its strong canine teeth to catch fish, lobsters, crabs, and other crustaceans. Cubera Snapper gather in large spawning groups over deep reef slopes or sandy drop‑offs, often influenced by the lunar cycle. These spawning aggregations are predictable and make it vulnerable to overfishing. The Cubera Snapper can live a very long time, with some individuals reaching an age of more than 50 years.
