Juveniles have a dark diagonal stripe that runs from the snout through the eye, along with a blue line below the eye.
The Schoolmaster is often seen on Bonaire in small groups on the reef, resting during the day. Juveniles are usually found in shallow waters among mangroves and seagrass beds. Adults primarily feed at night, preying on small fish and crustaceans. As they grow, their diet shifts to include larger fish. Schoolmaster Snappers reproduce by spawning in open water, where males and females release eggs and sperm simultaneously.
