The Jackknife Fish has a single black band running from the head down the middle of the body to the tip of the tail. Its fins are white to yellow and free of spots. Juveniles are yellow-gold with a vertical black mark on the snout, gradually fading to a lighter yellow as they mature.

The Jackknife Fish is usually seen in pairs and tends to be unconcerned, allowing divers to approach closely.
