The Sargassum Triggerfish has a bluish-gray body that can become lighter or darker. Its cheek has several dark lines, and its body shows rows of small dark spots that form thin, broken stripes. A small white spot sits in front of its eye. Its dorsal and anal fins have a dark line at their base, and its tail has red-to-orange edges and a broad curved band along the rear edge.
This Triggerfish usually lives in deeper areas where it swims above the bottom. Juveniles often drift near the surface among floating Sargassum seaweed. It is cautious and typically moves toward holes or cover when approached. It quickly retreats into small spaces if disturbed.
