The Spotted Drum has black and white bars on its head and multiple stripes along its body. Its rear fins are black with white spots. Juveniles have a long dorsal fin, a single stripe along their body, and a dark spot on their nose.
The Spotted Drum often stays near ledges or crevices, swimming in repetitive patterns. It is not shy and often allows divers to get close.
