This Filefish has a deep, flattened body with a noticeable appendage on its belly and sometimes two orange spines near the base of its tail. Its color ranges from gray to brown with an orange tint underneath. It has large white spots that may appear or disappear.
This Whitespotted Filefish is often seen in pairs, with one showing the pattern of white spots. It is curious but wary, usually allowing divers to get close if they approach slowly.
