The Great Hammerhead has a broad, hammer-shaped head with a slightly curved, lightly notched front edge. Its body is gray with a pale underside. Its first dorsal fin is tall, pointed and swept backward, and its pelvic fin has a curved rear edge. Its eyes are small.
The Great Hammerhead is mainly an open-ocean shark but can come close to coral areas on rare occasions.
