The Longspine Squirrelfish has distinct white triangular marks at the tips of its long dorsal spines. Its body is reddish with pale stripes and scattered white patches. The rear dorsal fin is elongated, and the upper part of the tail is extended.

This Squirrelfish usually stays in dim spots near the bottom during daylight. It is mostly active at night when it leaves its shelter to hunt small crabs and mollusks. It can produce loud grunting sounds to defend its territory. When approached closely, it tends to retreat into hiding.
