The Blue Runner has a bluish-silver, streamlined body that is deepest blue on its back and fades to silvery white on its underside. Its tail fin is deeply forked, with dark tips on both lobes. It sometimes has a distinct black spot near the edge of its gill cover. Along its lateral line, it has a row of bony plates called scutes, which are more prominent near the tail.
This Jack is a strong and fast swimmer that lives in open water but sometimes visits the reef, where it feeds on smaller creatures like small fish and shrimp. Blue Runners often form groups for improved efficiency in locating and accessing food.
