The Ladyfish has a long, slender, somewhat compressed body that is silvery to greenish on top and silvery to white on the bottom. Its head is small and pointed and it has a large mouth. A single small dorsal fin sits near the middle of its back. The pectoral fins are low on the body, while the pelvic fins are on the underside. The anal fin is located far back near the tail. The tail is large and deeply forked, and its fins are dusky yellowish to silvery. The lateral line is straight and runs to the base of the tail.

The Ladyfish is commonly seen in coastal waters, including bays and harbors, and occasionally ventures into open water but rarely goes near the reef. They form schools and are cautious. They eat mainly small fish and crustaceans, often swallowing prey whole.
