The Permit has a silvery, compressed body with a large back and a steep forehead. Its pectoral fins are black, and there is sometimes a dark blotch behind them. The tips of its long, curved dorsal and anal fins, as well as its deeply forked tail, are dark. Juveniles may have a light orange hue on their fins.
The Permit is usually seen alone or in pairs over sandy areas, where it feeds on mollusks and other small prey such as crabs and shrimp. It is an opportunistic feeder, and its diet changes as it matures. The Permit is known for its longevity and can live more than 20 years.
