The Rainbow Runner has a sleek, elongated silvery body with two vibrant blue stripes running from its head to its tail. Between these two blue lines is a distinctive yellow or yellowish stripe. Its dorsal and anal fins are low and long, and a smaller, separate finlet is located behind both. The tail is deeply forked, and its fins may have yellow tints.
The Rainbow Runner is a fast-swimming predator often found in open water, but it also forms groups that can be seen near the reef. It eats a variety of marine creatures, mainly small fish, shrimp-like crustaceans, and squid.
