Brown Chromis, Newly Settled

Newly Settled marine organisms have just arrived on the reef. They are still small and vulnerable and may not yet resemble adults.

Name: Brown Chromis
Scientific Name: Chromis multilineata
Family: Damselfishes
Taxonomic: Pomacentridae
ID Group: Small Oval Fishes
Size: 3 - 5.5 in.
Depth Range: On the reef (10 – 60 ft.)
Sightings: Seen many times

The Brown Chromis, also known as the Yellow-Edge Chromis, has a mostly brown or olive body with a noticeable dark spot near the base of its pectoral fins. The edges of its fins are often outlined in yellow, and its deeply forked tail can also have this coloration. A small white spot may sometimes be visible at the rear end of its dorsal fin.

This Chromis is active during the day and is often seen in moderate-sized groups well above the reef, feeding on plankton. Females lay eggs that stick to surfaces, and males guard and aerate them until they hatch.
