The Barbu has a smooth, grey silvery body. The lower part of each pectoral fin has several long, thin filaments that are not connected to the rest of the fin. It has two dorsal fins, and its tail is strongly forked. Juveniles have a dark blotch at the base of the pectoral fin.
The Barbu can be found in shallow, sandy waters, often in small groups. It swims close to the bottom and uses the long filaments on its pectoral fins to feel for food buried in the sand. It eats small crustaceans, worms, and other small organisms that it finds this way.
