The Channel Flounder has a long, flat body with both eyes set very close together. Its color ranges from brown and tan to gray, with many pale-edged, rosette-shaped spots. Several dark spots follow its lateral line, including one below the folded pectoral fin and another near the base of its tail. Dark vertical marks are widely spaced across its dorsal and anal fins. The Channel Flounder can quickly become lighter or darker to blend with the bottom.
The Channel Flounder is found on sand, rubble, and seagrass, especially around channels and calm sandy shore areas. It often lies still on the bottom and relies on camouflage. When it moves, it glides with a wave-like motion.
