This Batfish has a triangular body with a nose resembling a horn, often with small spikes at the tip. Its body color varies from mottled brown to tan, sometimes with dark spots outlined with white spots or line patterns. It has a pale band on the tail bordered by two darker bands.

The Shortnose Batfish can be found on sandy, muddy, or rocky areas, often near the reef. It uses its lure to attract prey and hunts for small shellfish and mollusks. It is not shy, but moves away when disturbed.
