Name: Green Moray
Scientific Name: Gymnothorax funebris

Taxonomic: Muraenidae
ID Group: Eels
Size: 3 - 5 ft.
Depth Range: On the reef (10 – 60 ft.)

This large Moray has a solid green body without any markings. Its green color comes from a yellow mucus covering its dark skin.

The Green Moray lives in a variety of habitats but is often found around piers and shipwrecks. It stays hidden in cracks or holes during the day, often showing just its head. It mostly comes out at night to hunt but can sometimes be seen swimming during the day. Its open mouth helps it breathe and is not a sign of aggression. It generally ignores divers but will retreat if approached too closely.
