This Eel has a body with large dark spots on the upper half and smaller dark spots on the lower half. A wide dark bar runs across the top of the head, sometimes extending to the cheeks.
The Spotted Snake Eel lives in sandy areas or rubble. It often buries its body, leaving only the head visible. It sometimes moves beneath the sand and emerges elsewhere. The eel allows divers to come close but will withdraw into the sand if approached too closely.
