The Crested Goby is usually brown to olive-brown with light spots on its head and dark stripes behind its eye. Males have a raised crest on top of the head and a large, upward-facing mouth. A male may have a bright orange patch near the back of its first dorsal fin. During breeding, males can become almost entirely dark.

The Crested Goby can be found in shallow areas such as saltwater lagoons and rocky areas near mangroves. Males are shy and often stay in small hiding places, while females are less cautious.
