The Spotfin Goby has a large dark spot near the lower rear edge of its first dorsal fin. Its head often has orange spots and block-like markings, with orange spots and stripes along the middle of its body. On white sand, it can become much paler, leaving only four faint dark spots along its body. Spotfin Gobies on Bonaire are mostly white with large light brown to orange spots on their sides.

The Spotfin Goby can be found in burrows on sand and may share a burrow with a snapping shrimp. It is cautious and quickly retreats underground when disturbed.
