The Bonnetmouth has an elongate body that ranges from dusky yellow to greenish with a bright metallic glow, and yellow to brown stripes along its sides. It has two separate dorsal fins and a deeply forked tail. The anal fin is located just behind the second dorsal fin. The pectoral fins are relatively long and pointed.

The Bonnetmouth is often found in small groups in deep water, but occasionally it can be seen alone on the reef. It comes out at night to feed on zooplankton and small fish.
