The Caesar Grunt has a silvery-gray body marked with narrow bronze‑yellow stripes. Its head is slightly darker, with some of the yellow stripes continuing onto it. The fins and tail are dark, coal-like in color (carbonarium), and the tail has a small pale edge.

This Grunt is shy and cautious, and can be found in groups or alone around rocky areas, on the reef, and in the mangroves. It is active at night or during dawn and dusk, feeding on crustaceans, mollusks, and small invertebrates. During the breeding season, it forms distinct pairs and lays eggs.
