The White Margate has a deep body with a long sloping forehead and a small eye with a white iris. It is usually pearl gray and mostly plain, although dark spots or three faint side lines may appear. Its dorsal fin and tail are often darker, and its tail edge may have a blue tint.
The White Margate can be found on sandy flats between coral patches and also moves over seagrass beds and rocky areas.
