This large Hogfish has a reddish-brown or pale-white body and a dusky patch extends from its snout to the dorsal fin. It has three long spines at the front of its dorsal fin and a dark bar on its tail. A black spot near the tail is visible in smaller individuals but fades as they grow. Its coloration shifts while feeding, turning into a dappled orange-red pattern.
