In the initial phase, the body is dark to mid-grey-brown, sometimes with two pale stripes running from the mouth to the tail base, and a white spot on the upper tail base behind the dorsal fin. Juveniles are red-brown with two white stripes along the body and a black spot behind the upper part of the head.
