The Barred Cardinalfish usually has a warm orange red or bronze body that may fade to much lighter shades. A dark bar runs from the rear dorsal area down to the anal fin, and another dark bar sits at the base of the tail.

This Cardinalfish mostly stays hidden during the day, sheltering deep inside crevices. After sunset it leaves its hiding places to search for food in open areas but often remains close to the entrance of its daytime shelters.
