The Black Jack is dark gray, brown or nearly black, sometimes with a silver or olive shine. Its forehead rises steeply. Its long dorsal and anal fins are dark, while its tail and hard scales near the tail are black. A small black spot sits high at the start of its gill cover. Its pectoral fins can be yellowish, especially in younger adults.
The Black Jack is usually found in open water near steep walls and drop-offs. It may swim alone, in pairs or in small groups.
