The Cero has a long, silver to greenish-blue body. A broken yellow-gold stripe runs along its middle from near the pectoral fin toward the tail, with rows of small yellow-gold spots above and below it. Its dorsal fin is dark, and its lateral line gently curves downward below the second dorsal fin.

The Cero spends much of its time in open water and sometimes passes above coral areas or along drop-offs. It is usually alone but may also travel in pairs or small groups.
