The Fileclam has a red, orange, or white mantle with long tentacles that may be white or pinkish. Its shell consists of uneven halves, featuring small ribs and visible radiating spines.
The Antillean Fileclam is usually found between rocks at shallow depths and can close its halves quickly to swim.
