The Rough Fileclam has a deep red to orange mantle and long tentacles that may appear red or orange in shallow areas but become pale at greater depths. Its shells are rounded and usually hidden, showing only the mantle and tentacles as it stays inside tight cracks. The valves are pale to brown and have many thin ribs.

This Fileclam lives tucked inside narrow cracks and small openings where most of its body stays hidden. It spends its time secured in these tight spaces and is often difficult to see except for its mantle and tentacles extending outward.
