Yellow Simnia

Yellow Simnia

The Simnia in this photo also has the orange spots that are characteristic of the Orange-Spotted Simnia. This demonstrates how difficult it is to identify these Simnias.

Name: Yellow Simnia
Scientific Name: Cymbovula sp.1
Family: Allied Cowries
Taxonomic: Ovulidae
ID Group: Snails, Clams & Shells
Size: 0 - 0.75 in.
Depth Range: In shallow waters (0 – 15 ft.)
Sightings: Seen very rarely

The Yellow Simnia has a yellow body covering the shell and is marked with tiny orange spots. The shell stays hidden under the soft mantle when it is active.

This Simnia lives on sea fans, where it feeds. It stays well hidden on its host and can be difficult to notice. The Yellow Simnia may be an undescribed species or a variation of the West Indian Simnia (Cymbovula acicularis).
