The Brownstripe Octopus often shows a broad dark band along each arm, with pale suckers below it. A reddish-brown net pattern covers the body and can become lighter or darker. A dark line runs across the eye area, and the mantle may sometimes have small wart-like bumps.

The Brownstripe Octopus lives in seagrass beds and on sandy or muddy bottoms. It often hides by digging into the bottom and may place shells or other loose material around its body.
